AutoCAD is a computer-aided design application created and marketed by Autodesk, Inc. It is used for drafting and creating projects using 2D and 3D designs. Since its inception in the early 1980s, Autodesk has released many versions of the AutoCAD software.

The AutoCAD 2000 version software was released in March 1999, and featured several enhancements from the previous version. Some of the main highlights of AutoCAD 2000 include support for non-rectangular viewport and web publishing of drawings through DWF file, a highly-compressed vector format for 2D images. Also, partially open projects or drawings can be saved in this version. There are object picking improvements with editing for solids and enhancements for layers with plot, plotstyle, and lineweight properties. Lastly, interface for AutoCAD dimensioning was changed and redesigned completely with the 2000 version.

The AutoCAD 2002, released in June 2001, was designed and enhanced for better performance and productivity, team collaborations, and extended reach of design data. Some of the new tools and main highlights of the 2002 version include automatic adjustments for geometry drawings and easier block management. Also, there was improved plotting through Text Scaling and DWG file sharing using eTransmit. AutoCAD Conference among teams and members was possible using Meet Now, as well as new and improved high-resolution format for DWG files was added. With the 2002 version, easier management of building projects through Autodesk Project Point was possible, as was collaboration with team members of construction projects through Autodesk Construction Manager.

The 2004 version was released in March 2003, and had few enhancements. Some of the main highlights and improvements for the AutoCAD 2004 were new and optimized formats for the DWG files for faster save and transmission of files and improved drawing tools from previous AutoCAD versions. Other highlights included improved features for drawing exchange, including multisheet DWF support, which allows team members to download the drawings and view or plot DWG files, but not edit them.

One of the first download sites to look for AutoCAD software and other related programs is the official Autodesk, Inc. website. The official website has a free trial of the AutoCAD 2008 software available for download. Aside from this, Autodesk also has a portal where students and teachers can download versions of the AutoCAD software for free. AutoCAD users can download free software versions, upgrades, and plug-ins in websites such as dwggateway.com, download3000.com, solidworks.com, and newfreedownloads.com. For information and tips on the best upgrades and plug-ins to use for AutoCAD software versions, users can also visit Autodesk blog sites and AutoCAD forums such as cadforum.cz.
